At Atech Logistics, safety isn’t just a policy—it’s a value that shapes every decision and interaction. Kristian Knox, the company’s Director of Fleet Safety, is at the heart of this commitment.
With a career spanning nearly two decades, Kristian has built a reputation as a leader who doesn’t just oversee safety but cultivates a culture of care and accountability that resonates throughout the organization.
From Humble Beginnings to Leadership
Kristian’s journey in logistics began in 2004 when he unexpectedly found himself behind the wheel of a non-CDL box truck for a previous employer. What started as a temporary solution to meet operational needs became a passion.
“I had no intention of driving trucks,” he recalls, “but being out on the open road sparked something in me.” Motivated by this newfound interest, Kristian attended commercial truck driving school, earned his CDL, and quickly rose through the ranks.
His time as a driver taught him more than just the technicalities of the job—it gave him firsthand insight into the challenges drivers face daily. This perspective proved invaluable when he joined Atech Logistics in 2011 as an Operations Manager. Overseeing operations at the Kent, WA facility, Kristian demonstrated a proactive approach to improving processes and promoting a team-centered environment.
In 2017, Kristian saw a growing need for a dedicated safety department. Seizing the opportunity, he proposed the idea directly to Atech’s leadership.
“I met with the CEO over coffee and laid out my vision,” he recalls. “At the time, it was just me, but I was determined to build something meaningful.” Over the years, that vision has grown into a robust department, now supported by a second team member, ensuring safety remains a cornerstone of Atech’s success.
A Day in the Life of a Fleet Safety Director
For Kristian, no two days are the same. “The transportation industry is highly dynamic,” he explains. “We’re regulated by federal agencies like the FMCSA, USDOT, and OSHA, as well as various state and local authorities. That means we’re constantly adapting to new challenges.”
Kristian’s responsibilities are broad, from managing claims and ensuring compliance to using vehicle telematics to monitor and improve driver behavior. Telematics, including in-cab cameras, are used for coaching and often to exonerate drivers in accidents.
“Our industry has seen a rise in nuclear verdicts from plaintiff attorneys,” Kristian notes, “so minimizing liability through education and proactive measures is a priority.”
His department also plays an important role in onboarding new drivers. Every potential hire undergoes a thorough review of their motor vehicle record (MVR) and PSP report, which provides detailed insights into their driving history and DOT inspection results. This rigorous process ensures that Atech maintains its high standards of safety and professionalism.
Through initiatives like driver meetings, coaching sessions, and establishing a Learning Management System (LMS), Kristian emphasizes continuous education. “Our goal is to create a sustainable culture where safety isn’t just a requirement—it’s a mindset,” he says.
Building a Legacy of Safety
When reflecting on his proudest accomplishments, Kristian doesn’t point to awards or metrics. Instead, he highlights the cultural shift he’s helped bring about. “Making a difference and fostering a culture where safety is a top priority—that’s what I’m most proud of,” he shares.
This culture is deeply rooted in Atech’s values. “Our people are our greatest asset,” Kristian says. “Since I joined in 2011, that’s been the guiding principle. It’s the hard work and dedication of our employees that have built this company into what it is today.”
Kristian describes Atech’s culture as one of pride, ownership, and family. “The inspiration and support from everyone here help shape not just the company’s path but also individual goals,” he explains. This sense of belonging is a key reason why Kristian remains so passionate about his role.
Balancing Work and Life
Outside of work, Kristian finds solace in the great outdoors. Camping trips with his family and ATV rides on scenic trails are his way of recharging.
“I may not hunt or fish, but there’s something deeply rewarding about being surrounded by nature,” he says. These moments allow him to connect with his wife and two young children, providing the balance he needs to excel professionally.
Interestingly, Kristian’s professional life influences his personal one. His vehicles are equipped with dash cameras, a habit born from his focus on safety at work. “It’s about protecting my family the same way I protect our team at Atech,” he explains.
Kristian also enjoys high-stakes TV dramas like Landman and Yellowstone, drawn to their portrayals of grit and resilience. “The landscapes and challenges remind me of why I value both problem-solving at work and the peace I find in nature,” he shares.
Looking Ahead
As Atech Logistics continues to grow, Kristian’s vision remains clear: to build on the foundation of safety and care he has established. Whether mentoring employees, adopting new technologies, or creating meaningful connections with colleagues, Kristian is dedicated to making a lasting impact.
Kristian offers this advice for those considering joining Atech: “If you’re looking for a place where your efforts truly matter, where you’re part of a family that supports and inspires you, this is the place to be. Together, we’re not just building a business—we’re building a community.”
Through his leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety, Kristian Knox embodies what makes Atech Logistics a leader in the industry—a company where people come first, and excellence follows naturally.
